This is part of the Marks on Land series, which includes aerial color photography of Northern California. This particular photograph was taken just south of the San Carlos Airport amongst the salt flats and slough of the San Francisco Bay. It’s large format digital photography using a helicopter as his platform. “This image is part of a ten-year project photographing these salt flats. Lacking scale, except for the white telegraph pole in the lower left, the scene leaves much to the observer. The orange color comes from the blooming algae contrasted against the white industrial salt and the green rivulets of the slough. It happens to be one of the last salt evaporation ponds of the South Bay and many, including the Cargill salt flats, have been restored to wetlands and conversation areas for sea and bird life. Over the past 40-years the Cargills have donated more than $150 million in land value. They have conveyed more than 40,000 acres of salt ponds to public wildlife agencies; a legacy that helped launch San Francisco Bay’s environmental renaissance.” – Tom Lamb
