Encaustics means burning in and is used to describe both the paint itself, and the method of using it. The effects portrayed in my paintings are the result of contemporary methods applied to the ancient art form of encaustic painting. Demar resin and dry pigments are combined with beeswax; I make the majority of my paints. The molten paint is applied to a wood canvas and melded, using a variety of techniques such as torches and heat guns. Demar resin raises the melting point of the wax by a few degrees and hardens the finished surface to create a lustrous enamel like effect. The layering of the encaustics creates a fluidity, luminosity, and depth that is richly emotive.A paint brush or putty knife are used to apply the encaustic paint, which is then fused with heat using a heat gun or propane torch; the fusing tools are like extended paintbrushes. The hardened surface reveals a lustrous patinaed finish. The paintings have anywhere from 10 to 30 layers producing visual fluidity, luminosity, and depth.
Temperature and Bloom
Encaustic paint begins to melt at 140 degrees, in freezing conditions encaustic paintings are subject to cracking. The surface of an encaustic painting my develop a cloudy film known as bloom, caused by unsaturated hydrocarbons migrating to the surface and crystallizing and can be buffed out using a soft cloth.
