Body of Work: Entre Lineas (Between the Lines) – 2019
The characters expressed by Gonzalez tend to surround us with numerous color combinations, which is exactly what the artist takes pleasure in; the free blending of tones. Their facial features, shaped by different brush strokes, prompt reflection on the mood and emotional state which inhabits them.
Not only is Gonzalez describing the physiognomy in her work, but is also detailing the body in a dynamic environment. The figure contrasts with each motion of the brush both internally and externally.
Gonzalez’s characters tend to be cold outsiders. They possess a trace of existential emptiness lacking both in gaze, facial elements, and specific attributes. Nevertheless, Gonzalez creates them in abstracted humanity; simplified, summarized, and synthesized so that spectators can appreciate them without any prejudice. In that sense, the artist makes them available to the observer so that they perceive the figures “entre lineas“, or “between the lines”.
