This is part of the Marks on Land series, which includes aerial color photography of Southern California. This particular photograph was taken in North Irvine, California. It’s large format digital photography using a helicopter as his platform. “Returning to the area formally controlled by the US Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, which was being slowly plowed under for housing developments, I was taken aback by the careful placement of the truckloads of stones. Having photographed this land for over 20 years, it was a ‘Dreamland’ to visualize this momentary flower-like landscape within the harsh subdivision. We moved the helicopter to frame the view as I envisioned it – as a vertical image. Like many of these aerial views, scale is absent, and orientation often changes over time. If you lay the image on the long side, it can appear as if you’re looking into a garden basket.” – Tom Lamb
