Description
This original mixed media painting on canvas is part of Blancarte’s latest body of work, which is inspired by Xoloitzcuintli, which is also known as the hairless dog of Mexico and is one of the earliest dogs to be domesticated by human populations. Archaeologists have discovered statues of dogs nearly identical to the current-day Xolo in tombs of the Mayan, Colima and Aztec Indians. These ancient tribes revered the dogs for their supposed healing qualities.
According to Aztecs the Xolo came about when the god of death, Xolotl, created a dog from the Bone of Life. Xolotl gave the dog to Man and instructed him to guard it with his life. In exchange, the dog would guide Man through the underworld on the way to the heavens.
These piece is absolutely stunning and it’s texture and depth cannot be fully appreciated via an image on a screen.
